Fiona’s trip to India

With Life Association

I have just finished my time at the Life Association school and I think I’m still in a daze from my experience in the village. Firstly, I want to pass on a big thanks to indiGO Volunteers as you were so encouraging and supportive when I first made my decision and I’m so glad I chose to go there as it was so special like you said! I basically lived like a local for 2 weeks, with an amazing local family and a family from Bristol in the school. It was myself and 3 other volunteers who were all nurses. We did a lot of health promotion including hand washing, teeth cleaning, assisting in English and maths lessons, and focused play and crafts.

The children lived in the Dalit village and came to the school for free education and meals, which they would have otherwise had no access to. They were so enthusiastic and appreciative of the support they were getting it was so lovely. As well as working in the school I had the opportunity to attend a Hindu/Christian Indian funeral which was such a beautiful and spiritual experience and one I felt so privileged to be part of! We were welcomed into the Dalit village and saw first hand how people with so little would give so much for their village and families, and us as visitors were treated like family. The family that ran the charity treated us volunteers like family and I felt so safe with them.

Thank you once again indiGO! I’m sure I will be in touch again for another volunteering project through you guys!
