I have always wanted to volunteer but I was put off by the fees that some organisations charge. But I stumbled across a post on social media that talked about Indigo Volunteers and that they offer fee free volunteering. So I applied and within a couple of weeks I had booked two weeks annual leave from work and I was on a plane to Bosnia to help out on my first volunteering project working with refugees.
I did a bit of a mixture of work from peeling potatoes and chopping onions (and gave everyone a good laugh at my onion tears!), to street food distribution, childrens’ activities (daily pre-school, trips to the park & arts/crafts) and organising activities for the women – we did baking, a day out for coffee and ice-cream and a women’s party on my last night (lots of dancing, chatting, laughter and cake!) I was able to bring a bit of normality to their very abnormal and stressful situation.
I would recommend for anyone to contact indiGO to get involved and bring a bit of happiness to other people’s lives. indiGO were amazing from my initial application to finding me a suitable project. When I arrived I was made to feel totally at ease and welcomed by the whole team. I felt like I could ask anyone anything and they are still there for support now I’ve returned home.
Thank you indiGO volunteers for the amazing opportunity.
