Action for Education

Action for Education is a young and dynamic NGO supporting refugee communities in Greece. They run non-formal education centres in Chios and Samos for women and young people. They are a 100% volunteer-run organisation.

In Chios, the project has set up a  Youth Centre and Learning Centre, offering safe spaces outside Vial Camp reaching up to 250 children and youth per week and over 2,800 participants since opening.

On Samos, there are two centres – The Banana House, a centre focusing on 18 – 23 year olds, filling a gap in education provision and access to basic services and The Nest, which has an extensive play space for young children aged 2 – 7.

  • Where is it?

  • What will I be doing?

The AFE volunteer teams work with asylum seekers to build resilience, develop skills and provide psychosocial support. Currently they run two projects located in Chios and Samos. One of your roles will be preparing and running appropriate and engaging language classes (mainly English, Greek, German and French).

The project on Chios has been running since 2016. Comprising a Youth Centre and Education Programme, this project provides essential safe spaces for refugee youth aged 15 – 22.

  • What impact would I have?

As part of the team you will provide vital non-formal education and psychosocial support in response to the conditions faced in reception camps and urban environments. Action for Education’s spaces offer an alternative to camp life, a means to fight boredom and create friendships across different ethnic backgrounds.

  • Who will I be working with?

You will be working as part of a volunteer team consisting of experienced youth workers, teachers and individuals with creativity, enthusiasm and a wide range of skills. AFE also work with people from the local community, camp residents and collaborate with other organisations.
